After 13 years of miscarriages, losses and pain, Paramjit and Naminder finally brought home their precious babies Ajooni - ‘eternal beyond birth’ - and Avnoor – ‘light of God’ – in October 2023. It was the most special, blessed day of their lives and one that had felt inconceivable after so much heartache.
The couple credit Laura and Nicky, their hospital’s twin midwives, and the Twins Trust Maternity Engagement Project, with providing them with the tailored, personalised service that reassured them and helped them to get through this pregnancy.

This level of care hadn’t always been the case for the couple. In 2018, they lost twins Amrit and Fateh at almost 20 weeks after Paramjit suffered from severe pre-eclampsia, which is very rare at this gestation. Even though the couple raised concerns about Paramjit’s severe symptoms, their concerns were dismissed by healthcare professionals as just a 'normal aspect of pregnancy' and they were told they didn't need to worry or be seen. Only two weeks later the couple were told that the outcome would have been different had they come in two weeks earlier, when they initially reached out.
On the back of many losses, losing twins broke Paramjit and Naminder. They didn’t talk to anyone. They blamed each other. Paramjit described herself as a ‘dead person walking’ after the losses, not wanting to go on living. The idea that things could have been so different haunted the couple, angry with themselves and furious at their care which should have been so different.
When Paramjit became pregnant again with twins in early 2023, the anxiety was overwhelming. That was when she was referred to Laura and Nicky and the multiples team at St. James Hospital, Leeds. The team had gone through the Twins Trust Maternity Engagement Project, meaning that the charity has supported the hospital to follow best practice (NICE) guidelines to promote good, safe quality care for all. Laura and Nicky are designated ‘Twins Trust midwives’ and they’re part of a multi-disciplinary team meaning that each pregnancy receives the required level of joined up care between midwives, sonographers and consultants.
Paramjit had this to say about her experience with Laura and Nicky: “Whilst previously I had been fobbed off, now I was treated as a proper person. They truly listened to me – it wasn’t just a ‘one size fits all’ approach. They knew what had happened previously and they took all my concerns seriously. I didn’t enjoy my pregnancy, but I wouldn’t have been able to get through it at all without them. It was thanks to their amazing care and the work of Twins Trust that I was able to bring my babies home, safe and sound”.
Paramjit’s message to others in her situation is that it’s vital to listen to your body and gut if you’re pregnant and make sure to get checked if you think you need to. She’s so grateful to her twin midwives who gave her the confidence to trust herself this time round.

As Naminder says, “we couldn’t believe that it was real when we brought our babies home. It felt amazing, extraordinary."
Our two little miracles were possible thanks to the unwavering support of Laura and Nicky and the approach of Twins Trust.
Paramjit added: “We couldn’t believe that they were really ours. I was so worried about them all the time at the start because they’re so precious. Now I just hope for others, that they too can bring their babies home, safe and sound, and avoid the pain that we went through”.
