A multiples pregnancy midwife will be teaming up with her daughter to take part in this year’s Walk for Twins Trust.
Abigail Higgins works at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. She and daughter Evelyn have been busy training for the walk near their home in Wrangle, Lincolnshire. They are aiming to complete a 10k route.
Abigail is no stranger to a charity challenge having completed half marathons for good causes in the past and was looking for her next challenge. She has raised more than £250 in sponsorship so far for the walk.
She said: “I was looking for something to do that was suitable for Evelyn and I. As part of my job I get sent the Twins Trust emails and I saw about the walk. I suggested to Evelyn that we signed up. We are training with at least two walks a week. It is also allowing us to have some uninterrupted mother and daughter time, chatting along as we go.”
Abigail has been a midwife since 2004, working on labour and maternity wards, antenatal clinics and as a community midwife too. Abigail started her role as multiples midwife in July 2022. The trust consists of two obstetric units - Lincoln County Hospital and Pilgrim Hospital. Each unit has a multiple pregnancy clinic and Abigail works in each of these clinics every week.
She said: “There has been lots of positive feedback from the mothers that have been cared for within the clinics, particularly with the continuity element of it. They like that the multiples do have a dedicated specialist clinic. This allows them to have confidence that their pregnancy is being well managed."
Empowering women is the part of my job I enjoy most
Abigail has been busy sharing her Walk for Twins Trust fundraising page with family and work colleagues and updating them on her progress with photos of her training walks.
She said: “Within my role I talk lots about Twins Trust and signpost women to the online resources and information. Twins Trust is a fantastic resource for women and their families and also for healthcare professionals. It feels great to be part of something that can help to raise funds and awareness for a much valued charity.”
There’s still time to sign up for Walk for Twins Trust. Find out more here.
